Welcome to Tao Te Ching Today where we talk about the reality of the Tao Te Ching from Lao Tzu’s eyes, I am your host Sean Webb. Ok so, last week we discussed chapter 5, we read chapter 5 and but how do we implement that lesson in to our everyday lives and if you recall chapter 5 was;

Heaven-and-Earth is not sentimental;
it treats all things as straw-dogs.

The Sage is not sentimental;
He treats all his people as his straw-dogs.

Between Heaven and Earth there seems to be bellows:
It is empty, and yet it is inexhaustible.
The more it works, the more comes out of it.
No amount of words can fathom it:
Better look for it within you.

Ok so, chapter 5 is well summed up in the last sentence, “better look for it within you.”

The beginning of chapter 5 suggest—Heaven-and-Earth is not sentimental; it treats all things as straw-dogs.  And if you recall from last week, ‘straw dogs’ is something that you feel no emotion about, something that’s its existence in your life is useful in your life… yet at the same time, when it’s done you discard it as a thing that its beyond its use. And so this suggests that we move through life without becoming too attached to things, without feeling too much emotion about things as they enter and leave our lives, because it is… simply as it is… and we can live life without the emotional turmoil associated with gaining and losing things, people, etc. as we live our life. But I think the more important lesson in chapter 5 is the last sentence which is, “better to look for it within you”. Because the reality of the Tao… again… is suggested through the first few chapters and again in chapter 5 where it says, “it’s empty, and yet it is inexhaustible. The more it works, the more comes out of it. No amount of words can fathom it” … we can talk about this until we’re blue in the face… but we’re never gonna understand the Tao until we experience it through enlightenment and “better look for it within you.”

Now this is the first suggestion to say where to find the truth of the Tao. Where to find the experience that will allow you to understand everything… look within you.

And so my thought on implementing chapter 5 in everyday life… this is our first suggestion to calm our mind and to meditate and who become a peaceful observer in our everyday lives, treating everything as straw dogs. Treating everything that comes in and out of our life simply as it is, enjoying it during the time that we have it in our lives yet when those things pass from our lives not yearning for them. Not feeling a loss for their absence. Simply observing life as it is, every moment as it moves through and… while at the same time looking inside ourselves for the truth that transcends what we understand.

And so if we could just do those two practices. If we could simply exist in our lives, observing everything as it is without emotional turmoil, without judgment, without labeling. That would be one way to increase the amount of inner peace that we experience while at the same time calming our minds, looking within, doing some sort of meditative practice to quell our turmoil or our demons and to hope for that pristine moment of awakening and understanding that is enlightenment that allows us to understand and fully experience Tao.

And so in living everyday today in our lives, the lesson that we need to take from chapter 5 is—live everyday as ‘an every moment’, accept everything as it is without judgment, without thought, without that emotional turmoil. And then as we move forward, look within for the truth that transcends that which we understand, so that one day not labor to live life every moment as it is. Because we will understand and see from Lao Tzu’s eyes… everything is as it is… and we will understand the Tao and how it creates the universe around us and in front of us.

So I hope that helps you understand a little bit better about chapter 5 and how we might be able to employ its lessons in our everyday lives.
